PARYLENE KNOWLEDGE SCS PARYLENE PROPERTIES

Parylene ChartParylene is the generic name for members of a unique polymer series. The basic member of the series, called Parylene N, is poly-para-xylylene, a completely linear, highly crystalline material.

Parylene C, the second commercially available member of the series, is produced from the same monomer modified only by the substitution of a chlorine atom for one of the aromatic hydrogens. The structures are shown to the right.

Parylene D, the third member of the series, is produced from the same monomer modified by the substitution of the chlorine atom for two of the aromatic hydrogens.

SCS Parylene HT®, the newest commercially available Parylene, replaces the alpha hydrogen atom of the N dimer with fluorine.

Overview of Parylene Properties

Parylene conformal coatings are ultra-thin, pinhole-free polymer coatings that find wide-ranging application in the medical device, electronics, automotive, military and aerospace industries. The family of Parylene coatings offer many valuable surface treatment properties to these industries, including excellent moisture, chemical and dielectric barrier properties. Additionally, Parylene coatings offer thermal and UV stability, and dry-film lubricity.

SCS Parylenes N, C, D and Parylene HT each offer degrees of the above properties. The variants, and their respective properties and benefits, are discussed thoroughly in the SCS Parylene Properties brochure, which is available for download in the SCS Technical Library. Additionally, market-specific properties and applications are discussed in supporting brochures that can also found in the library.
